Lizzo praises Taylor Swift’s ‘genius’ approach to music amid album struggles

Lizzo thinks Taylor Swift is 100 percent that b*tch!

During a recent appearance on the Proto Pop web series with influencer Swiftologist, whose real name is Zachary Hourihane, the “About Damn Time” singer opened up about how her perspective on success has changed. Rather than chasing chart positions or broad mainstream appeal, Lizzo says she’s now focused on creating music for the people who have supported her all along.

“Now it’s just like, who’s my fanbase? Who’s my community? Who am I talking to?” she said. “I’m talking to the Lizzbians. I’m talking to my people.”

While discussing artists who have mastered that connection, Lizzo pointed to Taylor Swift as the gold standard.

“I always talk about Taylor for doing… she’s been doing that for such a long time,” Lizzo said. “I just think it was so genius and so smart. I don’t even know if she had the foresight to do that. I think she just built it organically, and now she has her own community around her to back her up.”

Swift has long been known for cultivating one of music’s most dedicated fanbases. Throughout her career, she has hosted free meet-and-greets after concerts, interacted directly with fans on social media, invited select fans to exclusive listening sessions, and famously surprised some with personalized holiday gifts. Those moments helped create a loyal community that continues to support every era of her career.

Lizzo’s comments came during a broader conversation about the current state of pop music and how artists measure success in today’s industry. The singer also reflected on the commercial performance of her latest album, Bitch, admitting she struggled with its reception after it failed to make an impact on the Billboard charts.

“It dropped, and I was like, ‘Oh, OK, this isn’t what I thought it would be,'” Lizzo said. “I didn’t think it would be crazy, but I also didn’t think it would be this.”

She revealed that she briefly tied her self-worth to the album’s performance before realizing that mindset wasn’t healthy.

“There was, like, 24 hours of my life where I based my success and my worth on a number, and I think that was soul-crushing.”

Instead, Lizzo says she’s choosing to prioritize the people who genuinely connect with her music over chasing metrics. It’s a philosophy she believes Taylor Swift has embraced for years.
