EGOT-winning, multi-platinum singer, songwriter and producer, John Legend, has announced his forthcoming studio album, MUSE, arriving October 23 via Republic Records. The album was produced in full and co-written by Pharrell Williams, marking the first full project the longtime friends have created together in their more than two decades of friendship.
Alongside the album announcement, Legend has released MUSE‘s lead single, “Daylight.” The singer previewed the track during a performance from Nashville on CBS’ America’s Tailgate special, which aired ahead of the start of the NFL season.
MUSE finds Legend stepping outside of the formula that has defined much of his career. While he has become synonymous with piano-driven ballads and emotional love songs, the new album explores a much broader range of Black musical traditions, incorporating elements of gospel, doo-wop, classic soul, Afrobeat, hip-hop and traditional standards.
“I think my repertoire has always been very diverse, but the piano-driven ballads have gotten the most traction throughout my career,” Legend said. “I wanted to shake up the formula and do something fresh and new.”
The idea for MUSE began following Legend’s appearance on Clipse’s comeback album Let God Sort ‘Em Out. Legend contributed vocals to “The Birds Don’t Sing,” a track produced by Pharrell, and the collaboration ultimately inspired Pharrell to approach Legend about creating an entire album together.
“When Pharrell called me, I thought, let’s do this,” Legend recalled. “A lot of people would have imagined we’d done something like this already, but we hadn’t. It felt past due.”
The pair began writing and recording the album in Paris in January 2025, working out of Pharrell’s studio at the Louis Vuitton headquarters, where Pharrell serves as the brand’s Men’s Creative Director.
The resulting album draws inspiration from legendary artists including Nina Simone, Nat King Cole and Marvin Gaye. Legend says Pharrell envisioned a project that would blend classic, cinematic sounds with a modern rhythmic foundation.
“Pharrell’s idea from the beginning was that we would create something with all of these classic, cinematic elements, this Black James Bond aesthetic, but with a modern backbeat at its foundation,” Legend explained. “You can hear traces of me and traces of him, but it sounds like something new for the both of us.”
The collaboration was first teased through “Pray For Ya,” a gospel-tinged track that soundtracked Louis Vuitton’s Fall-Winter 2026 Men’s show and was later featured in Pharrell’s Moet Ice Impérial campaign.
Across MUSE, Legend and Pharrell explore a variety of characters, relationships and sounds.
The album’s title track opens the record with a story about a tumultuous relationship between a man and his muse. Set against the backdrop of Paris and the world of high art, the song moves through lust, commitment and betrayal.
“There was no particular, explicit person,” Legend said of the song’s central character. “We conjured a character we could write about, freely.”
The title MUSE also carries a deeper meaning, referencing the nine Muses of Greek mythology who were believed to govern music, science, literature and the arts.
“Our ancestors are our muses,” Legend said. “My music has always been me channeling the ancestors, taking what they gave us and making something new.”
Elsewhere on the album, “Her” looks back to the doo-wop and gospel music Legend grew up listening to, creating a nostalgic portrait of infatuation. “Get Back,” featuring Pharrell, leans heavily into the project’s cinematic side with smoky soul, horns and strings.
“Are You OK?” approaches a relationship argument with sarcasm and emotional intelligence, while “Bodies on the Floor,” featuring Clipse, uses the language of gang warfare as a metaphor for a toxic and magnetic relationship.
For Legend, creating Muse also meant giving up an unusual amount of creative control. The singer revealed that he recorded songs that Pharrell had completely written for him, something he rarely does.
As the album’s final mixes were being completed, Pharrell sent Legend a text that simply said, “Thank you for trusting me. Thank you for your patience.”
That sense of trust became central to the making of the record.
“It’s not about winning the argument or ego,” Legend said. “It’s about the music winning. Every battle should be won by the art.”
More than 20 years into his recording career, Legend also sees MUSE as a reminder that artists should continue taking risks rather than simply relying on their biggest hits.
“There are plenty of artists who get to a point in their career where they don’t make anything new. We can just play the hits; we can stay in our comfort zone,” he said. “But I believe it’s important to keep the mindset that I have to continue to prove myself.”
“I wanted this album to have that sense of urgency, to feel like something that needed to be made and is fully worthy of my audience’s attention.”
MUSE will feature 16 tracks, including collaborations with Pharrell Williams and Clipse. The album will open with its title track and close with “Sail Off.”
