Carly Rae Jepsen is back with a double album.
The Canadian pop star released her ninth studio album, Day and Night, on Friday via Interscope Records, delivering a project that explores the contrast between the bright, carefree energy of daytime and the more adventurous world of the night.
One of the standout tracks from the “day” side of the album is “Versailles,” a frenzied pop track inspired by Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film Marie Antoinette and its lavish depiction of pleasure, excess and escapism.
Jepsen co-wrote “Versailles” with Elias Kapari, Noonie Bao and Markus Krunegård, with Kapari also handling production on the track.
The song arrives alongside a music video directed by Kanya Iwana and filmed in Los Angeles, giving the track a visual world of its own.
Day and Night finds Jepsen continuing to push beyond the traditional boundaries of her signature pop sound. The album moves between symphonic pop, dreamy psychedelia and high-energy disco, creating a project that feels intentionally expansive while still rooted in the playful songwriting that has defined much of her career.
The album’s “day” half was previewed by singles including “On Wires” and “After All,” which introduced a more sun-soaked and left-field side of the record. Meanwhile, the “night” portion leans into forward-thinking dance music, with tracks such as “Motivation” and “Don’t Leave Me on the Dance Floor” embracing a bigger, more maximalist sound.
The ambitious scope of Day and Night has already earned attention from critics. Rolling Stone called the album “Jepsen’s most experimental and exhilarating work,” while praising the way she “makes falling in love feel brand-new all over again.” Vulture has described the project as “the most ambitious project of the Canadian singer’s 18-year career.”
For Jepsen, Day and Night represents another step forward in a career that has already produced some of modern pop’s most beloved moments.
She first became a global superstar in 2012 with “Call Me Maybe,” the massive hit from her breakthrough album Kiss. The song topped charts in more than 47 countries and earned Jepsen two GRAMMY nominations for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
Three years later, she released E•MO•TION, an album that would go on to become a modern pop landmark. The 2015 record has surpassed one billion streams worldwide and has been recognized by publications including Pitchfork and Billboard as one of the defining albums of the 2010s.
Jepsen followed it with 2019’s Dedicated, which expanded her sound into a more mature and emotionally detailed direction. The Atlantic praised the album as “brilliant.” She continued that evolution with 2022’s The Loneliest Time, released after a period of isolation and filled with some of her most reflective songwriting.
Her collection of B-sides has also become an important part of her discography, with E•MO•TION Side B, Dedicated Side B and The Loveliest Time giving fans an even deeper look into Jepsen’s creative process.
