Lady Gaga releases ‘The Dead Dance’ alongside ‘Wednesday’ premiere

Lady Gaga just dropped her new song “The Dead Dance,” which appears in season 2 of the Netflix hit Wednesday.

To bring “The Dead Dance” to life, Gaga recruited Tim Burton to direct the music video. It was a natural fit given Burton’s gothic fantasy legacy and his ongoing involvement in Wednesday, where he directed several episodes.

“I had a wonderful time working on Wednesday season 2, even just being a small part of the show,” Gaga said during a Netflix event last week celebrating the new season, according to Variety. “I loved working with Tim Burton and [Wednesday star].”

The track itself plays up Gaga’s signature mix of theatricality and dance floor energy. On The Dead Dance, she sings, “Like the words of a song, I hear you call / Like a thief in my head, you criminal / You stole my thoughts before I dreamed them / And you killed my queen with just one pawn.” Later, the chorus brings her back to life: “Cause when you killed me inside, that’s when I came alive / The music’s gonna bring me back from death / I’m dancin’ until I’m dead / I’ll dance until I’m dead.”

Alongside the release, Gaga updated her latest album Mayhem with an extended edition that includes The Dead Dance and two other new songs, “Can’t Stop the High” and “Kill For Love.” All three tracks slot seamlessly into the world of Mayhem, adding even more color to the record’s wild universe.

It remains to be seen whether Gaga will debut any of the new songs on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards this Sunday.
