Indy Yelich has released her sophomore EP, Fame Is a Bedroom, a five-track collection of emotionally rich songs that chart the turbulence of heartbreak, self-discovery, and identity. Out now via Mom + Pop Records, the project finds the New Zealand-born artist stepping further into her own voice, following her 2023 debut EP Threads and years of writing poetry, including the books Sticky Notes and Dudette.
Raised in a creative family, her mother a poet, her sister famously known as Lorde, Indy has always used words to understand her world. After moving to New York at 18, she began shaping those words into music, drawing influence from East Village punk, 80s icons, and the chaos of young adulthood. Her new EP was written across moments of transition, in dive bars and between time zones, with each track unpacking the mess and clarity that come from emotional growth.
Opening with “Savior,” the EP immediately sets a raw tone. It’s a breakup song that doubles as a personal breakthrough. Yelich says she doesn’t believe in closure, but this track offered something close to it. “Idol,” which arrives alongside the EP, is a standout, an intimate meditation on sisterhood that unpacks what it’s like to love someone constantly in the public eye. Lyrics like “they don’t understand your love, they’ll never be bound by blood” and “we’ve got the same hands but I’ve got my own scars” make clear this isn’t just a song about fame, but about deep familial ties and individual identity.
Elsewhere, “Grace” and “Sail Away” explore themes of codependent queer friendships, identity, and emotional fallout. Yelich has spoken openly about how much of this record came from reckoning with parts of herself that were hidden or unspoken. While fame plays a subtle role in the background, the songs are more about what happens in private spaces—the bedroom being a symbol for all that’s said and unsaid behind closed doors.
The EP features contributions from Miro Mackie, Daniel Chae, Boy Blue, Davin Kingston, Noise Club, Nick Monson, and Skyler Stonestreet, with mixing by Jonathan Low. Lizzy Land, a close collaborator, co-wrote several songs including “Sail Away,” continuing a creative partnership that began on Threads.
