The 2024 MTV VMA Awards were last night and were filled with tons of surprises. Among them, Camila Cabello delivered a standout performance of her new single “Godspeed” with a new look.
The performance opened with a clip of a blonde Cabello performing “June Gloom” from her C,XOXO album — before revealing the video was playing on a laptop, as she emerged in a white dress with long brunette locks and bangs.
Cabello stood alone in a clear booth with a camera as she sang the ballad, while several dancers surrounded her holding bats and crow bars, seemingly ready to smash the walls. At the end, she smashed the laptop on the ground, left the booth and joined the dancers to finish the song.
The “I LUV IT” singer was among the first group of performers announced for the award show alongside Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter. While this will be the VMAs debut for both Chappell Roan and Sabrina, it marks Camila’s third time performing at the event.
Cabello released her C,XOXO album in June and was nominated for best pop and best trending video for “I Luv It” with Playboi Carti. Around the summer release for her album, the singer bleached her hair blonde, a drastic change from her natural brunette color.
Cabello’s blonde transformation was done by celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos, so it’s only appropriate that he was on hand to return her to her natural shade.
“She wanted to go back to brunette after her blonde era and we couldn’t think of a better reveal than the VMAs,” Giannetos told Vogue, adding that Cabello’s new hue is “the shade is espresso martini.” Cheers to that.
The “espresso martini” quote may be a subtle reference to her recent love triangle with Shawn Mendes and Sabrina Carpenter, of whom her songs “Godspeed” and “June Gloom” seemingly reference.
