Stream: JoJo Siwa releases her debut EP

If you’re looking for more gay pop to add to your playlist this weekend, JoJo Siwa just released her debut EP titled Guilty Pleasure.

The former child star has been in the heat of a rebrand since the release of her lead single “Karma” in April. Since the release, things have been “brutal,” in her own words. Speaking about the promotion cycle for her EP, Siwa admitted that she hadn’t expected the amount of backlash she received. “For the last few weeks the world has been f–king brutal,” she said.” “They’ve been talking so much s–t … but I don’t give a f–k.”

Shortly after the release of “Karma,” listeners discovered it was an old throw-away track from singer Brit Smith. The backlash stunted the promotion for her music debut, but didn’t stop JoJo from moving forward. Instead, the 21-year-old doubled down on the hate and called herself a “guilty pleasure.”

Since the release of “Karma,” JoJo has been endlessly promoting her follow-up single “Choose UR Fighter,” though that single was swapped when it became a repeat of “Karma”‘s rollout. Instead, it was announced that she would be releasing the full EP instead of a second single.

Now the five-track project has dropped and can be streamed below! Aside from “Karma” and “Choose UR Fighter,” the EP also features the title track “Guilty Pleasure,” “Balance Baby” and “Yesterday’s Tomorrow’s Today.”

In a viral interview with Billboard back in April, Siwa spoke about how she approached her music career, claiming that she had “created” a new genre “called gay pop.” The singer faced immediate criticism, as music fans claimed that Siwa was far from the first queer person to make music expressly for queer people. In a later clarification, the singer agreed that she did not create the genre of “gay pop,” but added that she was invested in its success.
