Sia has returned with her first solo album in eight years with Reasonable Woman. The feel-good pop album proves the singer hasn’t lost touch with the industry, despite a hiatus from the Billboard Hot 100.
Since the release of 2016’s This Is Acting, the “Cheap Thrills” songstress has stayed busy with a Christmas album, her involvement with the critically-bashed film Music, and her electronic supergroup LSD. All of which pushed Sia’s wide ranging discography to its limits, though further away from her breakout hits such as “Chandelier” or “Elastic Heart.”
The promotion for Reasonable Woman began in October with the release of “Gimme Love.” Although, the track didn’t make much headway on the Hot 100, it was a needed reminder of what made Sia a groundbreaking artist for so many years. Her edgy vocals wailing over symphonic pop beats just always hits a bit different.
In addition to the Hilton duet, some stand-outs are “Dance Alone” with Kylie Minogue, “Incredible” with Labrinth and “Immortal Queen” with the legendary Chaka Khan. “Immortal Queen” is a quirky, yet funky ego-centric banger about being timeless.
“In one thousand million years/I’mma still be everywhere,” they sing. “Before planet Earth was here/I was riding a lightyear.”
Songs like the opening “Little Wing” and “I Forgive You” play it safe and simple, toning done the antics to let her vocals and story telling take center stage. “I hope you can hear me say/ Through all of your tears today/ That I know you’ll be okay,” she sings on “Little Wing.” Reminiscent of “Bird Set Free,” but this time Sia sings to another to dry their tears and fly.
It is safe to say, Sia will keep doing what she does best on this venture. I think it is reasonable to say Reasonable Woman won’t be the game changer 1000 Forms of Fear was for the artist, but it certainly fills out the trilogy modern Sia records with Fear and This is Acting.
