During her VMA red carpet debut, Chappell Roan yelled back to a photographer who overstepped their boundaries.
Roan raised her voice at a photographer stationed at the step-and-repeat, telling them to “shut the f— up,” according to a viral video shared on X.
“No, not me, b—,” she added with a stern gaze. The response was seemingly targeted at paparazzi who was heard yelling “shut the f- up” first.
Shortly after the exchange, the “Good Luck, Babe” musician explained that she just meant to stand her ground. “This is quite overwhelming and quite scary,” she told Entertainment Tonight on the carpet.
“I think for someone who gets a lot of anxiety around people yelling at you, the carpet is horrifying and I yelled back,” she continued. “You don’t get to yell at me like that.”
Since her massive rise in fame this Summer, Chappell has been very vocal about her insecurities in it all. She has previously said the fame is overwhelming and has since went to social media to address “creepy” fans who have been stalking her and her family.
“I do not agree with the notion that I owe a mutual exchange of energy, time, or attention to people I do not know, do not trust, or who creep me out — just because they’re expressing admiration,” she said in the August statement on social media. “Women do not owe you a reason why they don’t want to be touched or talked to.”
Luckily, the starlet also said the situation has been getting much better in an interview before her performance last night. She was also awarded the “Best New Artist” award and used her speech to read from her diary and thank her LGBTQ+ fans for their support.
