Album Review: Jax’s ‘Dear Joe,’

Jax Dear Joe.

Tiktok sensation Jax just released her debut album Dear Joe, with a boastful 20 tracks.

The long-awaited album has been in the works since 2021 after signing with Atlantic Records. The former American Idol contestant released the ballad “Like My Father” in October of 21′ to critical acclaim, though it wasn’t until the following year when her single “Victoria’s Secret” would chart on the Billboard Hot 100.

Dear Joe, was announced in April on the Chris Sernel podcast in the form of a “Joe Mama” joke. The singer later clarified that Dear Joe, was in fact the actual title despite the joke. Cleverly enough, Jax’s humor plays a key role on her debut.

The album features her two previously released singles (R.I.P. “Cinderella Snapped”) alongside some powerful songs such as the album standout “I Choose Violence” and the charming “a song for Chelsea.” Those serious moments are scattered between songs with a more comedic nature such as an “Adam Sandler” interlude and a sample of the viral “That mother f–ker is not real” plane video in “the new girl is a snake.”

While a bit chaotic in nature, the album is cohesive and was given careful direction. There are moments and song titles that make you question what exactly you’re listening too, but that’s what makes it memorable. Sadly, the only song that truly feels out of place on Dear Joe, is the singer’s biggest hit “Victoria’s Secret” which is tacked on as the final track.

Needless to say, while there are many moments that won’t land with everybody, but within the 47-minute album there is still plenty of heart.

Dear Joe, is now available to stream via all major streaming platforms!
